Watch out Vista, Ubuntu got back!

One of my first priorities after getting Ubuntu up and running was to make it sexy. Damn sexy. OS X has spoiled me, and I need my eye candy. Unlike the limited skinning options with Windows (Windows Blinds or hacking the uxtheme.dll), you can actually replace the desktop environment, the window manager, file manager and a number of other applications with Linux. Say I don't like the Gnome desktop environment... I can just install another. If you have one, you can install the other and decide which you want to use when you login. Mezzo, for example, disposes of the idea that the desktop is just another folder as well as nested menus, attempting to simplify the experience. I am sticking with Gnome at the moment but am curious to see what the others have to offer. Then there is the window manager.

The reality for most potential Ubuntu users is that they've bought their computer with Windows pre-installed or have already installed another Linux distribution. These users have probably already used their existing operating system for a decent period of time and have accumulated documents, email, settings, and other files that can be imported and translated for use in Ubuntu, but the existing Ubuntu graphical installer mercilessly destroys them. Ubuntu 6.10 is the latest Linux offering from Mark Shuttleworth’s Canonical company. Though based on Debian, Ubuntu has garnered quite an adoring and sizeable following since its inception only a few years ago, and quite rightly, too; Ubuntu has software management tools and an elegant interface that rivals Windows (and perhaps even Mac OS X). It is so easy to use it almost takes the thrill and intellectual challenge out of using Linux! Dubbed Edgy Eft (what’s with the cute alliterative pet names?!), this distribution continues along with Ubuntu’s tradition of stability and ease of use.

Downloading the iso was a little difficult to find the right download links. But then I checked out distrowatch who had a link to the iso directly. Ten hours later, it was done. I didn’t see anything different after booting from the cd. Linspire to be based on Ubuntu

Yesterday, Linspire and Canonical issued a joint announcement that Linspire would begin to base its distributions on Ubuntu rather than Debian, and that Ubuntu users would be able to use CNR to install proprietary applications and drivers, starting with the Fiesty Fawn release.

Running a home IMAP server on Ubuntu

I tend to work from several locations, and I like having access to my mail folders from everywhere. Some of my mail comes from POP accounts, but I also have access to an IMAP server. For a while, I used to store “active” conversations on the IMAP server, and periodically archive them in the mbox folders at home to stay within my alloted mail quota. Portable Document Format (PDF) files have become somewhat of a de-facto standard for representing fixed layout 2D documents, and their use and versatility have grown over the past decade. Recently, Adobe announced that it intends to release the PDF 1.7 specification for publication by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). As demand increases for this format, many are wondering, what tools can be used to create PDFs with free software?
Fortunately, there are a variety of free software that is available to author PDF files. I'll specifically highlight two packages that are easier to use and require less configuration. While the advantages of the uniform presentation are usually advantageous, I feel that the emphasis should be on the content, not the container.

Firewire problems on Debian sarge

Last week I had to move (and therefore reboot) a machine running Debian sarge (stable) which has a couple of FireWire drives attached to it. Last time I did this it all came up beautifully of its own accord; sadly not this time. The logs showed the nodes being recognised by the ieee1394 module, but not actually being mounted.

Beryl — Wall Plugin

Hey guys, changing the format of TWiB up this week a bit. I get bored enumerating bug fixes and new features, so instead I have a video to show. This is the new wall plugin that racarr has been working on, it is really quite fantastic. It allows users to do a traditional plane style viewport layout, but also to zoom back out and re-organize their windows in a birds eye view. You can also switch desktops in this manner by right clicking on the appropriate viewport. In the near future animations are going to be added to switching viewports without using expo mode. Installing Ubuntu 6.10 on old computers low on Ram

had been using Linux on my thinkpad for over 2 years now , it isnt a piece of marvel just a modest configuration Pentium M 1.4 GHz , 256 MB Ram and a 40 GB HDD with a slow cdrom drive(hey my original DVD drive got damaged had to use the cheap stuff from market),i had used all sort of Linux distributions from from Fedora Core's to Kubuntu to Linspire to OpenSuse none of the distribution gave me any sort of problem during installation or running . However Ubuntu Linux 6.10 installation and Live CD mode really provided a lot of headaches to me , i had installed Ubuntu 6.06 earlier which installed and ran in Live CD mode quiet flawlessly but on running the latest Ubuntu Distro i was shell shocked the Live CD took more than 10 minutes to just load on my PC not to mention on clicking the install button there was a further 10 - 15 minutes coffee break for me . Now these times may seem absurd to you but it's true coupled with low ram , slow cd drive and apparently Ubuntu not using my swap drive made this a hellish experience .
